Fridays with Sky Bear ALC

Open to youth ages 5-12 Fridays 9:00 am-2:30 pm

Port Townsend, WA

Flying Squads is an international youth liberation and anti-oppression project designed to challenge divided spaces between young people and the rest of their community. This means that Flying Squads step out of the classroom and off the playground and into public spaces as a form of youth activism. Sky Bear Agile Learning Community is proud to bring this global movement to Port Townsend, WA, as one of its programs. We are currently assessing interest in the community with plans to start in Spring 2024 on Fridays.

Unlike school field trips, Flying Squads do not have a predetermined destination but instead practice the crucial skills of deciding together where to go and how to spend their time.

Each day starts at Chetzemoka Park, a central location with access to Uptown, down town, beach, woods, trails, parks, and shops. The group meets and explores common interests as a collective, experimenting on how to build community, voice ideas, and make decisions together. We, as facilitators, guide and support as needed, suggesting ideas when asked but without overshadowing. Then off we go! We gather back where we started before the day is over to reflect, share, and deepen.
